Diet and Physical Activity

The workplace can benefit from active employees who are healthy, happy and lead a more balanced lifestyle.  Promoting physical activity in and around the workplace is simple and inexpensive and there are many effective initiatives to choose from.

To stay healthy and productive we need to programme activity back into our working lives, with over half our waking hours spent at work it isn’t easy to find the time and effort, the good news is there are many ways to get active and energise your day with bursts of activity.

Physical activity can contributes to the health of your business through:

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
World Health Organization, 1948
  • increasing productivity
  • improving absenteeism and ability to return to work after illness
  • retaining staff
  • reducing workplace injuries
  • improving workability among older employees
  • creating a positive corporate image
  • reducing industrial injuries
  • improving the morale and health of the workforce
  • helping your business achieve Health at Work awards

A workplace environment that fosters physical activity and good health can contribute to the health and well-being of all employees and presents a positive image both to the outside world and to employees.

A better diet can have a big impact on your health at work, helping to protect yourselves from health problems is one very good reason to think about eating healthy.

There is now a broad consensus of expert opinion that a healthy eating pattern can help to reduce the risk of a cardiovascular disease, cancer and obesity. Employers can take simple action to promote healthy eating and gain benefits. For example, providing proper food storage facilities, i.e. a fridge, can help prevent food-borne illness and reduce sickness absence.

Although it is unlikely that short-term benefits will be seen, employers who promote healthy eating can help the nation in its attempts to reduce diseases such as cardiovascular disease. In the long term, it will provide benefits for employers.

Healthy Business can help you and your employee’s approach and encourage a healthier lifestyle.
