Health and Safety

Occupational health and safety affects all aspects of work and may require a trained competent manager in a low hazard organisation or many different specialists in high hazard plants to ensure there are satisfactory health and safety standards within an organisation.

There are many obstacles in a business to the achievement of good standards such as pressure of production or performance targets, financial constraints and the complexity of running a business are examples of such obstacles. However, there are some powerful incentives for businesses to strive for high health and safety standards, these incentives are moral, legal and economic.

Successful businesses usually have good health and safety management systems in place and this provides a sound basis for the improvement of health and safety performance.

Most of the key elements required for effective health and safety management are very similar to those required for good quality, finance and general business management and would centre around the following:

Safety is, without doubt, the most crucial investment we can make. And the question is not what it costs us, but what it saves.
